Library History

Read how this library was established and how it has evolved to become such an important part of our community.

The first Colesburg library was established in 1983 in the dining room of the Masonic Lodge, with encouragement from the Twentieth Century Review Club.

The estate of Minnie Grimes soon pledged $27,000 towards establishing a permanent library site.  The lot on Main Street was donated by the Wm. F. Brockmeyer American Legion Post, with provisions for a community center/meeting room in the back of the building.

Community fund drives and grants contributed the rest of the building money and furniture, and donations and memorials of books poured in.  The new library building was officially dedicated in October of 1986, and has been going strong ever since!

This resource is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act as administered by State Library of Iowa.
